The short version: what you type stays on your Mac. Suggestions come from a model that runs on your Mac. On the free plan the app sends nothing anywhere. On a paid plan, or with the key of an ended plan still in the app, it sends only your license details.
What the app reads
With the Accessibility permission you grant it, the app reads:
- The text before and after your cursor in the field you are typing in.
- Up to 800 characters of text on screen near that field, such as the email you are answering or earlier chat messages. It stays within that window or dialog, ignores what is typed into other form fields, and tries to skip menus, toolbars, buttons, links and marked sidebars. You can turn this off in Settings.
- The name of the app you are in, the window title, and the field's label, to decide how long a suggestion should be.
- The keys you press, to know when you have paused and to catch Tab and Esc. It also keeps the keys typed since your last click or Return, for apps that hide their text from Accessibility. You can turn that off in Settings, and then those keys are not kept.
All of this is held in memory only. It is not written to disk, and it is cleared, along with recent suggestions, when you switch apps, click or use a keyboard shortcut. Everything is gone when the app quits.
What the app skips
- Password fields and anything under macOS Secure Input.
- Common password managers and terminals (1Password, Bitwarden, Keychain Access, Passwords, Terminal, iTerm, Ghostty and Warp), unless you remove them from the list in Settings.
- Fields labeled as a recipient, name, phone number, address, one-time code or card details. This relies on the label, so it can miss a field.
- What is typed into other form fields near the one you are in.
- Any other app you add to the list.
Where suggestions come from
By default, Apple's on-device model, running on your Mac. The app does not use Private Cloud Compute. If you choose the optional Ollama setting, suggestions come from Ollama on your own Mac instead, and the app accepts only local addresses for it.
What leaves your Mac
On the free plan, nothing, unless the key of an ended plan is still in the app, in which case it is checked about once a day until you remove it. On a paid plan, your license details: your license key and the activation ID Dodo issued for this Mac. The app sends them to Dodo Payments' licensing service when you activate, to check the license is still valid (about once a day on the monthly plan, about once a week on the one-time plan), and when you deactivate. Activation also sends a fixed device label ("Mac"), not your computer's name. Like any internet request, these reveal your IP address to that service.
The text you type, the text on your screen and the suggestions are never sent. The app has no analytics, no crash reporting and no account.
What is stored on your Mac
Your settings and the count of suggestions you have accepted today, in the app's preferences. On a paid plan, your license key, in a private file in Application Support. Deactivate in Settings before deleting it, or the key stays tied to this Mac until you email us.
When you buy
Purchases are handled by Dodo Payments as merchant of record. Dodo collects your name, email and payment details under its own privacy policy, and we never see your card number. We receive your email address and license record, and keep them for as long as we need them to support you and honor your license.
This website
These pages set no cookies. The product page loads Cloudflare Web Analytics, which counts page views without cookies. The page shown after purchase does not, but Dodo sends you there with your license key and email in the web address, so they pass through this site's hosting provider. The download is served from dl.backrock.co, which records the time, browser and country of each download, so we can count them.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct or delete personal data we hold, which is at most your email address, license key and purchase record. Email [email protected] and we will act on it. For payment data, contact Dodo Payments.
Changes
If this ever changes, this page and its date will change first, and the release notes will say so.
